Metadata is information about a learning resource that you add to the resource to help other users locate it and understand its purpose.
From within a Learning Object Repository (LOR), you can search for learning resources (objects and files) based on their metadata, and you can view an object’s metadata to determine whether it suits your needs before you import it into a course. Depending on your permissions, you can also edit the learning object’s metadata.
Organizations can require adding metadata when publishing a learning object to an LOR. You can specify a set of required metadata that is mandatory for learning objects.
The Metadata tool enables you to work with metadata for content modules and topics, course files, and learning objects.
Note If you have permission to view metadata but not to edit it, you will see View Metadata in a content module or topic's context menu.
Learning Environment includes six base views that implement the widely used metadata standards of Dublin Core, GEM, and IEEE LOM. Learning Environment also includes two default system views, CanCore and Asset Metadata, inherited from the IEEE LOM base view. See Understanding metadata views to learn more about base metadata views.
You can create additional views, templates, and taxon schemas for your organization to enable users to enter repetitive information quickly and consistently.
You can edit metadata for a learning object or file inside Learning Repository. See Publish a learning object (topic, module, or course) for more information about editing metadata in LOR.
If you have the permission Edit Metadata, you can edit metadata for modules and topics using the Content tool.
